Trade Finance Reporting & Reconciliation
Designing secure reporting and reconciliation systems for UKEF's trade finance loan data.
Overview
UK Export Finance provides loan guarantees to support UK businesses, but the reporting process between banks and UKEF was manual and error-prone. Banks emailed monthly spreadsheets in inconsistent formats, creating delays, incorrect reconciliations, and a heavy administrative burden.
I worked as part of the End to End Trade Finance transformation, designing two connected experiences:
- A secure reporting portal for delegated banks, validating uploaded data and preventing incorrect spreadsheets from entering the workflow.
- A new reconciliation area within UKEF's internal Trade Finance Manager system, enabling finance officers to match reported fees against payments received and quickly identify any shortfalls.
These improvements strengthened data accuracy, reduced manual processing, and made the workflow clearer for both internal and external users.
Role and responsibilities
I worked across alpha and early beta as part of a multi-disciplinary team, designing for two user groups: delegated bank staff submitting financial data, and internal UKEF finance officers processing it.
I designed the end-to-end reporting and reconciliation journeys, creating fully interactive prototypes in the GOV.UK Prototype Kit for user research and stakeholder walkthroughs. These prototypes helped the team test assumptions, explore complex financial logic, and demonstrate the proposed service during the Alpha Service Assessment.
My work focused on improving data accuracy, reducing manual processing, and making the overall workflow clearer for both external and internal users.
