Overview
Get permission for marine work is the Marine Management Organisation's transformation of marine licensing, replacing its legacy case management system. I joined at the start. Alpha was the exemption notifications journey, a clearer, simpler flow that took the service through its assessment. Private Beta is the marine licence application journey, a much larger part of the service.
Role and responsibilities
I designed the full exemption notifications journey, mapping the entire flow in Figma and creating a production-like prototype in the GOV.UK Prototype Kit that captures all rules, logic and interactions.
The prototype played a central role in the Alpha Service Assessment, demonstrating the end-to-end journey and enabling the team to validate the design early. It then became the source of truth for development as the service moved into Private Beta.
The caseworking side of the service runs on Dynamics 365, where there is no prototype kit to use, so I built a caseworking prototype from the ground up, matched screen for screen to the live system, so caseworkers could test real tasks without touching production.
The marine licence application journey for Private Beta, the larger part of the service, is mapped and prototyped the same way.
Phases
Joined at the start of Alpha. The exemption notifications journey took the service through its Alpha assessment and into Private Beta, where the marine licence application journey is now the main piece of work.
Outcomes
- Designed the end-to-end exemption notifications journey and delivered a production-ready Private Beta prototype
- Reduced user effort by redesigning the multi-location journey to remove repeated data entry
- Built a Dynamics 365 caseworking prototype from scratch so caseworkers could be tested on real tasks without the live system
- Created clear Figma flows and fully interactive prototypes that aligned the team and accelerated delivery
